Antique Shop Counter - Haberdashery Plans Chest - Drapers Table - Kitchen Island
An exceptional and substantial late Victorian shop counter, museum entranceway, plans chest of drawers, constructed of mahogany and oak, circa 1900. This large and impressive piece was engineered to show its craftsmanship and functionality from all sides, lending itself an array of room placement and design options. The long two plank counter top sits above a significant two bay eight drawer configuration, with all drawers retaining their original brass flush drop handles. All raised on a plinth base.
This would have been the main focal & greeting point of a high end business establishment, so whether the public were buying event tickets, expensive jewellery / haberdashery etc, all ladies and gentlemen would have been made to feel comfortable while standing, by means of a raised footrest to take the weight off your feet. A stunning touch to this special piece!
Aesthetics here, matched by its versatility & function.
Among the many decorative elements to this piece:
A raised footrest with a stunning heavy gauge and curved brass banding.
Decorative, fielded panels to back (or front) & both sides.
Architectural decorative support corbels to back (or front) & both sides.
Original or later painted black satin finish to three sides.
Enviable patination to surface top and foot rest/well
Displays a superb & consistent patination throughout. The top shows all manner of dings, marks, or scars associated with a good working piece of furniture, originating from a museum/retail setting, which gives it the enviable character shown here. Felt linings to drawers later removed.
Condition: Solid, robust & fully functional.. Historic woodworm to one section of one drawer (treated twice as a precautionary measure) Lacking timber moulding to one side. Overall, an absolute corker!
