Antique English George III Mahogany Chest of Drawers

Antique English George III Mahogany Chest of Drawers

£690.00

A handsome and well proportioned late 18th century English, George III mahogany chest of drawers, dating to circa 1780-1790.

The well figured mahogany top has a moulded edge and sits above two short drawers and three graduated long drawers, each with beautifully figured mahogany fronts and fitted with oval brass handles and decorative escutcheons.

The drawers are traditionally constructed with hand cut dovetail joints and retain their old paper drawer linings, lending an authentic and charming sense of age and history to the piece.

The chest retains its distinctive pale bone escutcheons, their small vertically elongated diamond form and central positioning above the handles being particularly characteristic of Georgian cabinetry. The oval brass handles are possibly later Regency replacements adding a further layer to the history and continued use of this substantial piece.

The chest stands on distinctive shaped bracket feet, with a moulded lower edge, completing the restrained yet elegant design.

The rich warm colour and naturally mellowed patina have developed beautifully over time, while the figured mahogany and desirable, balanced proportions give the chest a particularly pleasing and commanding presence.

A substantial and versatile piece of Georgian furniture, equally at home in a traditional interior or used to bring warmth and character to a more contemporary setting.

The chest is reassuringly solid and robust and presents with a pleasing and honest surface patina throughout, reflecting its considerable age and history. The brass drop handles are not all identical, consistent with the possibility of later replacement or alteration over the chests long history. These signs of age and use are entirely commensurate with a piece of late 18th century furniture and further contribute to its authentic character and appeal.

Condition: A good, honest triangular veneer repair at top which is a genuine attribute to its overall appeal. A minor and stable split to lower side. All drawers glide back and forth and fit deliberately in place. Usual small dings, marks or scars associated with an authentic Georgian chest. Overall superb!

English, George III period, circa 1780-1790.
