Antique Georgian Mahogany Chest on Chest of Drawers

Antique Georgian Mahogany Chest on Chest of Drawers

£1,565.00

A handsome George III mahogany chest on chest, dating to the late 18th century, circa 1790.

The upper section surmounted by a generous, deeply moulded & stepped cornice, above three short drawers and three graduated long drawers, flanked by finely detailed, vertically fluted and canted corners, adding definition and an architectural quality to the piece. The lower section of generous proportions, incorporating three graduated long drawers, set within a simple moulded framework, providing ample practical storage.

The beautifully figured mahogany drawer fronts come dressed with their original decorative cast brass handles and escutcheons, complementing the rich tones and natural figuring of the mahogany.

The whole chest stands and displays extremely well on raised and shaped, traditional bracket feet.

A particularly pleasing example of Georgian furniture, combining elegant architectural detailing with the enduring appeal and practicality of traditional craftsmanship.

Condition: Solid, robust and fully functional. Displays a pleasing, rich and consistent patination throughout. All drawers are extremely clean, (protected with paper liners) run smoothly and fit deliberately into place. Small age-related and blended surface knocks, mainly at sides. All brass locks present.

The back retains old strips of furniture tape, possibly serving as an early draught & dust excluder for the drawers, an interesting detail from the chests previous working life.

A great piece of Georgian craftsmanship with a striking presence!
