19th Century Ebonised Oak Glazed Gun Cabinet - Display Bookcase
A magnificent and unique late Victorian, ebonised oak glazed gun cabinet - display bookcase. Circa 1890-1900. Substantial, & wonderfully proportioned, this piece breaks down into two sections for ease of portability.
The top cabinet section displays a heavy plate, full length bevelled glass door with original locking key, ring hoop brass handles and exposed finial hinges. This opens out to reveal a shelved & spacious interior. The ebonised framework structure, exhibits beautifully hand worked carvings and domed characteristics, along with well crafted corbels supporting a cleated frieze and corniche top.
The considerable base, displays twin cupboard doors, each with moulded and fielded panels, that open out to reveal an eight drawer interior. The right side drawers are compartmental and sectioned for storing cartridges. The left side drawers present open storage. As above the framework displays exceptional characteristics
Exhibits an enviable patination throughout.
Overview: A very handsome and unique cabinet. Shelves have probably been altered from securing rifles to accommodate for books and ornamental display. This can be reversed if required as the shelves are removable. The same key locks top and bottom doors. Top drawers to cupboard base have dis-similar brass drop handles. Similar ones maybe sourced.
Condition: Solid, robust & fully functional. Dings, marks or scars commensurate with age and use. Shows an authentic and consistent patination throughout.
