An absolutely stunning estate made enclosed cabinet, bank of drawers with iron carrying handles, circa 1900. The highly crafted exterior with wonderfully exposed dovetail jointing has much of its original paint finish. The two doors to the front, one with brass catches top and bottom, the other with gilt metal nameplate open up to reveal an interior fitted with an arrangement of fourteen variable sized drawers, each with beautiful flush fitting gilt brass handles.

The craftsmanship is of the is of the highest standard and is evident in the number of joinery skills used. All drawers are constructed using dovetail jointing to the front sides and back, all of which fit snugly and deliberately into place. The doors also have good, strong mortice & tenon joints. This would have been purposely crafted for someone of the highest regard with the intention of keeping their possessions within safe & away from prying eyes.

This trunk/cabinet could have also been used by the military for campaigns or a pharmaceutical company for safe storage. This could also align with the theory of being a salesman’s demonstration piece, where he would travel around showcasing to prospective clients what could be achieved in cabinetry skills.

A truly one off, highly decorative, functional and versatile piece of furniture that fits so well into today’s popular interiors. Along with the tactile nature of the cabinet, the aesthetics (age related wear /patination) for me, are as good as it gets.

No key present. The striking plate with hoop/hole to the top allows for attachment of lock if required. This can then act as a strong box/safe.

Condition: Solid, heavy construction, fully functional. All the dings and scars associated with a working piece of furniture have been polished in to retain its originality. More photographs available on request.
