Antique Art Deco Revolving Oak Library Bookcase with Bakelite Index Numbers

Antique Art Deco Revolving Oak Library Bookcase with Bakelite Index Numbers

£940.00

A rare and impressive antique English oak revolving library bookcase, displaying Bakelite numbered index plaques and a collapsible reading stand, circa 1920s.

The construction elements show influence from the late Victorian period, through to the beginnings and impact of the Art Deco era.

This characterful library bookcase features an open slatted oak framework and tiered construction, with a neatly collapsible reading stand that revolves smoothly on a central iron and timber shaft, that connects & terminates on a four armed solid oak base with later attached and patented, sliding/revolving castors. All set off by the wonderful aesthetics of the original Bakelite numbered index plaques.

Originally designed for seated use next to an armchair. Tilting the surface stand brings books, papers or correspondence closer towards the user for ease and portability of reading.

Displays enviable aesthetics and proportions.

Although later added, these patented castors from around the 1950s give better stability than the small ceramic castors. We know this to be the reason as we sourced this library bookcase direct from the family themselves.

Condition: Solid robust and fully functional. Revolves smoothly. Wear commensurate with age. Small dings or scars associated with a working piece of furniture. Overall superb!
