Japanese Beshimi Noh Theatre Mask - Surrealist Folk Art Carved Wood Display

£420.00

A wonderfully striking Beshimi Noh, Japanese hand carved theatre mask, depicting classical exaggerated features of expression. This unique, one off mask, hand crafted from cypress wood by a master sculptor and painted in layers down to the finest detail. This character exhibits a strong gaze with bulbous eyes, furrowed eyebrows, flared nostrils and tightly pursed lips.

Now considered an incredible piece of historical wall art dating to the mid 20th century.

A Beshimi theatre mask is a type of Japanese Noh mask used to portray demonic or ferocious divine beings, easily identified by its tightly closed mouth. The name "Beshimi" comes from an obsolete verb meaning "to press one's lips" together. These masks create a strong expression of anger or supernatural power through their glaring eyes, furrowed brows, and compressed lips.

Performance Characteristics:

Noh is distinguished by its use of masks, costumes, and props, which are integral to the storytelling process. The actors convey emotions and narratives through stylized gestures and movements rather than through dialogue. The performances are accompanied by traditional music played on instruments like the shamisen and taiko, enhancing the overall atmosphere of the play.

The Beshimi mask is without doubt one of the most intriguing among those used in Noh theatre.

The mask shown here in different lights and backgrounds.
